Hospitals are among India's most demanding waste environments: enormous daily volumes, strict segregation boundaries with biomedical streams, and zero tolerance for operational failure. Since April 2022, GPWM has operated the materials recovery facility handling the wet and dry municipal waste of VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital — one of the country's largest hospital campuses.
The numbers compound quietly. Across fifty continuous months of documented operations, the facility has processed approximately 8,755 tonnes of waste — with monthly throughput growing from around 138 tonnes in the first year to roughly 208 tonnes per month today, nearly 7 tonnes every day. Every kilogram is weighed, recorded and reconciled monthly.
What makes Safdarjung singular is its commercial architecture: the operation charges the hospital no service fee. It funds itself entirely through the sale of segregated dry recyclables — and shares a portion of its earnings back with the hospital. The waste pays for its own management, and the host earns from material that previously cost it money to dispose of.
